Diamond grading is rigidly structured.
Many people want round brilliants, with 58 facets, standardized
crown and pavilion angles, and ideal table proportions,
which maximize brilliance and the beauty of a diamond. When
the Gemological Institute of America's color and clarity
grading systems were introduced in the 1930s, they became
practically the world standard. The highest colorless grade
is "D," and each new letter to "Z" indicates more yellow.
A color grade near "D" means greater rarity and a higher
price. Eleven GIA clarity grades (judged at 10X magnification)
cover all diamonds from "Flawless" to three "Imperfect"
grades with visible inclusions.
