Ben Bridge Jeweler

It’s not a Bridge you’ll drive across, but you probably see his namesake everywhere without even realizing it. Herb Bridge, the son of the original Ben Bridge jeweler, turned 92 Wednesday and while he may be slowing down a little, it might not be smart to tell him that.

He still comes into work nearly every day and as a former lightweight boxing champion at the University of Washington, he brings his feisty spirit with him.

His service involvement could fill up half of a newspaper. Herb Bridge has been involved in, and led so many of Seattle’s institutions, they call him Mr. Downtown. He has been past President of the Downtown Seattle Association, the past President of the Washington Athletic Club, a chair of the Federated Jewish Fund in Seattle, a fundraiser for the Goodwill Games in Seattle, and instrumental in the Seattle Housing Resources Group designed to bring housing to low income residents. He’s been involved with founding the Better Business Bureau, a board member of the Seattle Rotary, and a lifelong fundraiser for many Seattle causes. He retired in 1983 as a Rear Admiral from the Navy. And in his spare time, he and his brother ran Ben Bridge.

The things he’s most proud of though, are his family and his company. Talking about family members involved in the company he practically swells with pride.

“It started with my Mother.” Bridge said. “She could find a piece of jewelry for anyone who walked in.”

And it’s continued with future generations, who still operate the company.

“We are in the sentimental business. I love this business. It’s in our blood.”

In the meantime, Herb is looking to the future and his next project.
