So, you want to get married?

There are a million things running through your mind when you think about getting married. When will you propose to your partner, how will you propose, will there be an audience, or do you prefer an intimate proposal? What kind of style does your partner have, what does he or she want the ring to look like? Is your partner traditional? Though these are all valid questions, there are a few really important topics to consider before the big moment. Even before you start ring shopping or purchasing, you need to ask yourself:

How much can you spend?

If you have no previous experience purchasing jewelry, walking into a jewelry store can be intimidating–don’t let it overwhelm you. You can always look around without the pressure of purchasing. Store associates, especially those within the Ben Bridge family, are more than happy to help you with any and all questions you have. Looking at rings, either in a store or online, is a good way to gauge price ranges to further support your final financial decision.

The myth about “three month’s salary” is antiquated at this point. Finding a budget that works for you and your family’s future is most important, regardless of your salary. Some couples have this conversation together rather than putting the responsibility on one person. Whether you are working together to create a budget or doing it on your own, there are key factors you should consider.

  • Choose the gemstone

Though diamonds are the most traditional gemstone of choice for an engagement ring, they are not the only option. Sapphire is a very popular second choice and there are plenty of options for alternative engagement rings including ruby, black pearl, white topaz, or any other beautiful center stone. Your budget will look different depending on what gemstone you end up choosing.

That being said, it is no wonder why diamonds are the most beloved. Diamonds have long commemorated our most special moments while creating memories that last for a lifetime. Considering their history in engagement, marriages, and millions of love stories, there is a reason diamonds have a reputation of representing “forever.”

  • Consider the 4 Cs

You have probably heard of the 4 Cs when it comes to diamonds–clarity, cut, color, and carat weight. All four of those factors weigh in on the price of a diamond ring. If you compare two diamond rings of the same carat size, the color and clarity can affect the price of the ring drastically. Decide which is most important to you and your partner and budget from there. Does your partner want a two carat diamond ring, but is less concerned with clarity? Are you more concerned with the cut than the color? All of these factors come together to help you create your perfect budget.

  • Remember your anniversary

Though engagement rings are important, you can always upgrade your diamond (or other gemstone) later in life. If your budget does not allow for a higher-priced ring at this time in your life, keep in mind that a 10 or 15-year anniversary diamond upgrade is a thoughtful and meaningful gift.

Ultimately, you know how much you are able to spend. It helps to have somewhat of an idea of how much you would like to invest on your engagement ring before shopping around so you have a clear idea of what engagement rings are in your price range.
