I have a collection of gem specimens in my office. Most of the collection came from my grandfather because, as he told me, I was the gemologist in the family. I have slowly added to it as I’ve found the right pieces. I find tremendous inspiration being surrounded by such beautiful things the earth created.

At the end of my desk sits a beautiful slice of an unusual gemstone called rhodochrosite. It has varying shades of pink with bands of white dancing throughout it. Rhodochrosite was one of the stones I learned about while at GIA that I instantly fell in love with. It had the happiest pink color and wonderful patterns of banding that run through it. I look at that specimen everyday, and when I started my collection I was determined to find a place in it for this unique stone.

Necklace, earrings and ring created with rhodochrosite and black sapphires, from the new Hawaii collection

A couple of years in to my collection, I now feel comfortable introducing this unlikely gemstone into the collection. It took us a while to find the right supplier who could source the stone, but the first time I saw a sample being made, I literally squealed in delight. It was just perfect!

I love that every necklace, every ring, every pair of earrings will be different; that no two patterns are alike. I can’t wait to start wearing these pieces and introduce the world to one of my favorite, happiest stones.
