At the young age of eight-years-old, Oscar has found a unique entrancement in his life — the Ben Bridge logo.
For many years, Oscar has found himself drawn to the curly letters of the words “Ben Bridge.” He points out the sign to his family whenever he comes across it; serenading it, talking to it, dancing in front of it, and genuinely expressing joy just by looking at the cursive logo.
Though the collection of pictures of Oscar in front of Ben Bridge signs has grown over the years, the sign outside of his local store at Capital Mall in Olympia, Washington has become even more significant in recent weeks. After a third trip in a row to Capital Mall with his mother Heidi, Oscar was officially greeted and welcomed into Ben Bridge.
A Ben Bridge associate by the name of Maria decided to introduce herself to Heidi and Oscar after noticing them outside of the store. What started with an offer of candy evolved into a truly touching friendship. After Heidi explained to Maria the true meaning behind their frequent visits, Maria invited them both inside the store and offered Oscar a sampling of all things Ben Bridge. From flyers, postcards, and brochures, all with the logo prominently displayed, to his very own Benny Bear, the Ben Bridge exclusive teddy bear reserved for the holiday season, Oscar was truly treated, as his mother claims, “like a king.”
When Heidi reached out to us to let us know that we made quite the difference, as she and Oscar are not always given such warmth, we were all moved. In Heidi’s own words:
We have been eyeballed and even told we couldn’t be helped at other stores in the mall. Today, at Oscar’s favorite store, the one that counted, we were treated like royalty. It meant the world to my son and our whole family. You should know, you have incredible human beings working for you.
As the mother of a special needs child, the kindness of strangers and the dedication to making our community a great place means the world to Heidi and her son — and to all of us.
We are so happy to have met Heidi and Oscar and are touched by their compassion and kindness. Thank you KING 5 for the heartwarming story.
