It is hard enough to decide what to wear on a daily basis – adding jewelry to the equation only increases that indecision. We all have the days when we are set on wearing our favorite pair of jeans but can’t find the jewelry to match – or vice versa. Some mornings, your pearls are the priority but you aren’t quite sure what outfit will accompany them best.

But not all jewelry is so specific in its style, or even in its color. The fascinating gemstone known as “alexandrite” is particularly interesting when it comes to its seemingly magical coloring. Alexandrite has been described as an “emerald by day and a ruby by night” as it has been known to change from bright green to deep red depending on the time of day and the lighting surrounding you. Because of the way the stone absorbs and reflects light, it can change color multiple times a day.

In other words, alexandrite matches everything.

Named after Tsar Alexander II in 1834, alexandrite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone has quite the noble history, its colors even mirrored the former Imperial Russian flag. Alexandrite is rare, and though considered a “newer” gemstone, has a great story to tell. Though deeply rooted in Russian history, alexandrite is rarely, if ever, mined in that area anymore. Today, alexandrite is most often found in Brazil, where the stone has more luster and is typically more brilliant than the alexandrite of yore.

Because of its rarity, alexandrite is fashioned into a “mixed cut” to maximize the weight and color change rather than its brilliance, which is often the focus when cutting a gemstone.

So how do you wear alexandrite?

If you have an alexandrite pendant, the gorgeous blue-green color would look great with your favorite spring or summer outfit, from shorts to your favorite bathing suit for lounging. An alexandrite ring can easily take your dress-down day to the next level. Alexandrite earrings can subtly enhance your outfit – for all of the weddings and/or brunches you are attending this summer.
